Young Peoples' Counselling Service
BYPCS Leaflet
The service operate one day per week offering seven places of eight x 45 minute counselling sessions to young people between the ages of 7 and 16 years who are experiencing emotional difficulties. In order to meet the needs of the young people we work with, it is sometimes necessary that we work longer term.
A year ago this service provided four counselling sessions per week and was based at the Centre. Over the past year we have increased our capacity in response to greater demand and have also started delivering sessions within a primary and a secondary school. We have reduced our waiting times from four months to within two months of referral.
Among the comments made by young people who have used this service are:
'It was a relief. It helped me understand'
'I don't know why it worked coz I didn't like it! But I do feel better after being here.'
Mostly our referrals come from schools, education welfare officers, social workers and other community workers who are involved in the lives and families of young people. Parents can also make referrals on behalf of their children and young people can refer themselves to the service.
